In My PikNik Era!
As the Houston humidity finally begins to recede, it's the perfect time to grab a basket, a blanket, and your favorite snacks. Don't worry, you can still enjoy a beautiful day outdoors without driving to the Hill Country. Here are my top spots to embrace the autumn air right here in Houston.
1. Hermann Park
This isn't just a park; it's a Houston institution. This massive green space offers multiple excellent picnic locales. This is the GO TO picnic location. Here's why:
Lakeside views: My personal favorite spot is near McGovern Lake, where you can watch the ducks and admire the scenic reflection of the Japanese Garden.
The Commons: This updated area features new grilling and picnic spots, perfect for a family day out.
Bonus activities: After your meal, you can catch a free show at the Miller Outdoor Theatre or take a ride on the Hermann Park Railroad.
2. Buffalo Bayou Park
With its impressive downtown skyline views, this park offers a uniquely urban picnic experience. Here's how:
Near The Water Works: Spread your blanket on the Water Works lawn for a relaxing afternoon with great acoustics and an amphitheater setting.
Lost Lake: For a more intimate vibe, look for a spot around the Lost Lake, a lovely, peaceful area of the park.
Post-picnic fun: You can also walk or bike the miles of trails, or watch the action at the Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark.
3. Levy Park
Located in the Upper Kirby district, this modern green space is a fantastic option for a fun and well-equipped picnic. Unique attributes?
Central lawn: The open green space is perfect for laying out a blanket and letting the kids run free.
Gathering tables: For those who prefer a solid surface, there are plenty of seating and picnic table areas available.
Entertainment for all: In addition to the lawn, the park often hosts free events and has a playground for the little ones.
4. Menil Park
Looking for a more peaceful and art-focused picnic? The shady, oak-studded lawn of Menil Park is a beautiful, serene choice. If you like a wild and creative vibe:
Art and nature: Enjoy a quiet lunch in the dappled sunlight, surrounded by some of Houston's most impressive architecture and world-class art.
Low-key vibe: With a more tranquil atmosphere than some of the city's larger parks, it's ideal for a relaxing, conversation-filled afternoon.
Artful addition: Don't forget to stop inside the Menil Collection museum for a free dose of culture.
5. Memorial Park (Eastern Glades)
The newly redeveloped Eastern Glades offers a beautiful and private-feeling picnic setting. if Intimate Moments are your mood here's why the Eastern Glades may fit the bill:
Peaceful coves: You can find perfect, secluded spots to lay out your blanket in one of the many coves throughout the new landscape.
Natural escape: This area features a lovely blend of manicured landscapes and natural wetlands, with boardwalks and trails to explore after your meal.
***Important note: To keep this area pristine, be aware that biking is not allowed in the Glades, and permits may be required for certain gatherings.
No matter what you're looking for H-town has the perfect place for you to make memories with the one's you love.
